Admission Process

The admission process begins with a referral or inquiry from a parent, an independent educational consultant or other professional to our clinical social worker. The clinical social worker uses this initial conversation to assess the student’s potential for admission.

The next step in the process is a request for records, testing and detailed reasons for referral. These items can include:

  • A cover letter describing the child’s issues and reasons for seeking placement
  • Psychiatric/Psychological Reports
  • School Records, including current Individual Education Plans (IEP) or 504 plans
  • Medical Reports
  • Written and verbal information from treating professionals.

If the background materials confirm the potential for admission, the family and student are invited to visit the Lodge. This visit provides the family, student and our staff the opportunity to interview and evaluate the student’s needs. If the family, student and Lodge staff feel that admission is indicated, we will work together to determine a timeline for admission, setting the dates of the preplacement home visit and admission.

The preplacement home visit sets the foundation of a cooperative treatment alliance, develops treatment goals and affords the Lodge a detailed understanding of the student’s functioning in his home environment. During the home visit, a clinical staff member can meet with therapists, school and medical personnel as well as family and friends. This step helps the Lodge prepare a holistic, comprehensive treatment plan.

On the day of admission, the family and student meet with key staff members to process the emotions of the day and discuss the plan for treatment. When the student says goodbye to his parents, he goes with staff to unpack his belongings and begin to bond with the adults who will be caring for him. The family has an opportunity to meet with our clinical staff on this critical day of hope and new beginnings.
